The Chairman of the Goromonzi Commercial Farmers Association, Mr Peter Gambara, has called on farmers to consider rabbit production as part of efforts to mitigate the effects of the El Niño conditions projected for the 2026/27 farming season.

Mr Gambara made the remarks during his welcome address at a rabbit production training programme conducted by the Zimbabwe Commercial Rabbit Breeders Association (ZICORBA) for members of the Goromonzi Commercial Farmers Association in Harare on 22 July 2026.

He highlighted the importance of agricultural diversification as farmers prepare for a potentially challenging farming season. Rabbit farming presents an opportunity for farmers to explore an alternative livestock enterprise that can contribute to household incomes and strengthen resilience in the face of climate-related challenges.

The training introduced farmers to key aspects of commercial rabbit production, including the basics of rabbit farming, breed selection, rabbitry equipment and management, and rabbit diseases.

The programme was conducted as part of the partnership between ZICORBA and the Goromonzi Commercial Farmers Association, with the two organisations working to promote knowledge and skills development in commercial rabbit production.

As farmers face changing climatic conditions, diversification can help create new opportunities, strengthen resilience and support sustainable livelihoods.
